The Heavy debutaron en 2007 con un disco llamado Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, cuyo primer single fue That Kind Of Man. Allí ya se veían cuáles eran sus influencias: las melodías y cuerdas del soul adaptadas a décadas más recientes. Prince parece ser una referencia, también algo de garaje y del hip-hop de los últimos tiempos: su tema Girls era tan Fun Loving Criminals como The Streets. A finales de 2009 publicaron su segundo álbum, The House That Dirt Built, disco que en estos días han presentado en nuestro país.

Inzona.- Han llamado a vuestro estilo neo soul ¿Cómo lo definiríais vosotros?
The Heavy.- Probablemente la mejor descripción de nuestro sonido sería… Hubo una cita que decía Imagina que por fin pudieses estar en tu banda favorita, pues ahí es donde está The Heavy ahora mismo…

I.- The House That Dirt Built es vuestro segundo disco ¿Qué tal ha sido la acogida por el publico?
TH.- Todo nos va muy bien ahora mismo. Hay buena asistencia y un gran apoyo a través de la radio, lo que es realmente útil para nosotros.

I.- El single Sixteen es pura energía, Short Change Hero me recuerda a Amy Winehouse, Long Way from Home a Living Colour… pero todo con vuestro toque personal ¿Os ha costado mucho dar con vuestro sonido?
TH.- Nosotros no pensamos en ello. Las canciones se manifiestan de un modo del que sólo podemos ponernos de rodillas y dar lo que están pidiendo.

I.- ¿Cómo veis el panorama musical británico actualmente?
TH.- Hay algunas buenas bandas ahí y siento como si el país tuviese por fin una fuerte identidad ahora mismo…

I.- ¿Qué nos podemos encontrar en un directo vuestro?
TH.- Sudor, bajos y lágrimas….oh, y suciedad

I.- Habéis tocado en España hace poco ¿Que tal fue?
TH.- Nos pareció ir bien en todos los lugares y la gente le gustó, así que supongo que volveremos en algún momento. Nos gusta la energía de allí.

I.- ¿Os volveremos a ver este verano por algún festival?
TH.- Hay muchos festivales pendientes ahora mismo pero a juzgar por los últimos veranos….vamos a estar ocupadísimos.

ENGLISH VERSION

The core of the group, guitarist Dan Taylor and vocalist Kelvin Swaby, became friends in 1990 when they bonded over vintage R&B and Jim Jarmusch films. The other members of the band are drummer Chris Ellul, bassist Spencer Page, and keyboardist Hannah Collins.
After releasing two singles in the fall of 2007, The Heavy released their first LP Great Vengeance and Furious Fire on 17 September, 2007 in the United Kingdom and 8 April, 2008 in the United States. That Kind of Man, their first single from the album, was recorded and mixed by Corin Dingley the original drummer/member of The Heavy at Alpha’s studio and released on record label Don’t Touch Recordings before Ninja Tune heard it and promptly signed them. On 26 March, 2008, The Heavy were the Artist of the Day in Spin Magazine. The band were also tipped in Rolling Stone’s Hot List in May 2008. They played in the 2008 South By Southwest music festival on the 89.3 The Current stage and collected one of the Best Discovery awards in Spin Magazine’s Best and Worst of SXSW ‘08.
They appeared on the 2009 LP, Johnny Cash Remixed, with the remixed version of Doing My Time. On October 2, 2009 their second album The House That Dirt Built was released by Ninja Tune.

I. – Your style has been defined as neo soul, how would you define it?
TH.- There was once a quote that said “Imagine if you could be in your favourite bands at once, well The Heavy already are….”
Probably the best description of our sound to date.

I.- The House That Dirt Built is your second LP. Tell us about the public acceptance.
TH.- It all seems to be pretty good for us right now in terms of exposure. There seems to be a good presence via syncs and great radio support, which is really helpful for us.

I.- The single Sixteen is pure energy, Short Change Hero reminds me of Amy Winehouse, Long Way from home of Living Colour… but all with your personal style. Was it difficult to find your own beat?
TH.- We don’t think about it. The songs manifest themselves in a way where we can only get on our knees and deliver what they’re asking.

I.- What do you think about the British music scene?
TH.- There are some good bands out there and I feel as if the country has definitely got a very strong identity right now…..

I.- What to find in a The Heavy live show?
TH.- Sweat, bass and tears…….oh, and dirt.

I.- You played in Spain not long ago, how was it?
TH.- We seemed to go down well in all the venues and the crowds seemed to be completely up for it, so I guess we’ll be heading back again at some point. We like the energy there.

I.- Will we see you in a fest this summer?
TH.- There are a lot of festivals pending right now but if the last two summers are anything to go by…….. we are gonna be busy, busy, busy.
